What Cotton Yarn Best For

Cotton yarn has several benefits to it, and a few specific reason you may want to choose it over acrylic. Cotton and cotton blend yarns are widely used during the warm month due to its breathability, especially for garments and blankets. Cotton is also very durable and holds up well to washing and wear.

Being very absorbent makes cotton yarn THE best option for kitchen and bath items such as cloths and scrubbies.

The durability and strength of cotton yarn also makes it a great choice for bags as it has little to no stretch to it, and holds its shape well.

Types Of Cotton Yarn

There are quite a wide variety of cotton yarn to choose from and some are more economical than others.

A few of the most commonly used cotton yarns used in crochet are 100% cotton, mercerized cotton and cotton blends.

Mercerized cotton and cotton blends are suggested for garments, blankets, bags and other similar items. Because mercerized cotton and cotton blends are less absorbent it’s best to stick to 100% cotton for items intended to get wet or are needing to be absorbent such as cloths and scrubbies.

For items such as trivets, pot holders, and bowl cozies that are meant to be near heat, I would recommend also sticking with 100% cotton to reduce any chances of melting.

Where To Find Cotton Yarn

Cotton yarn is widely available at most retailers that sell yarn in store and online. Here are some of the most popular and known brands I have come across:

One last note before we get to the patterns the above list is by no means comprehensive, there are loads more options for cotton yarn and cotton blends! Try some out and experiment to find your faves!
