Braided Crochet Cowl
It’s time for another Guest designer pattern! I am very excited to share this gorgeous Braided Crochet Cowl pattern by Jo from Jo’s Crafty Hook!
This cozy and warm cowl will be perfect this winter for gifts or even yourself!
Meet The Designer
I was always intrigued with crochet at a young age. I would watch my Gram and Ma crochet so many beautiful things. They would try to teach me the basic stitches, but all I could do was make a chain. I could crochet some of the longest chains in history.
When my kids were school age, I wanted to do something useful to fill my time, so my Ma would sit down with me week after week teaching me how to crochet. The hardest thing about my Ma teaching me how to crochet is that she is right-handed, and I am left-handed. When me and my Ma would look at each other’s work, we would think the stitches. were upside down. lol
After years of crocheting such a variety of patterns, In 2018 I started out testing for other crochet designers. The challenging thing for me when testing other designer’s crochet patterns is most of them are written for right handers and I am left-handed. Boy was this an eye opener! There is a lot of hard work and so many things that are done behind the scenes when designing.
After many months of testing crochet patterns, in 2018 I decided to start designing my own crochet patterns. With the Welsh Braided Cowl I added crochet stitches that I have never done before. As a crochet designer I constantly challenge myself to keep on learning and developing my skills.

Welsh Crochet Cowl Pattern Information
The pattern design combines different techniques for a shawl with a cowl. The shawl is worked in rows which increase as you add more rows on. The shawl creates an added barrier that you can wear under or over a jacket or sweater during the colder months.
The cowl is created by closing the shawl by forming a U shape. Once you join your shawl ends, the cowl is made by crocheting rounds of braided puff stitches. The braided puff stitches are used to add an extra flair to the design.
The cool thing about this design is once the Welsh Braided Cowl is complete it looks like you are wearing 2 separate accessories with your wardrobe.
I looked up the meaning of Triad and Braided before I named this design. Both meanings include a group of three things that are connected or woven together.
Triad means a Welsh form of literary composition with an arrangement with groups of three.
Braid means to weave three strands or objects together.
When designing a crochet pattern I do think there is a literary composition to it. You braid or weave these three things together. You braid the writing of the pattern; the description of your pattern or meaning behind your pattern; and the actual stitches used in the design.
The Yarn
I used *Knit Picks Brava Worsted Weight Yarn in Currant and Wine. Autumn is my favorite time of year. I love to see all of the different tree leaves change colors. There are so many pretty colors. There is a tree called the Burning Bush in my area. It gets such a deep and bright red that I can’t really put into words but using the Currant and Wine color yarns really remind me of the bush.
I also chose these colors because once the leaves fall off of all the trees, it can get pretty gloomy looking here, so I wanted to remind myself that there will eventually be color again.
A special thank you to *WeCrochet for providing the yarn for this project and sponsoring the the Guest Designer Series!

The best thing about crocheting is that everyone can learn at their own pace. It is trial and error, no matter what level of a crocheter you are. In 2018 it was easy to stick to using the basic crochet stitches when designing a crochet pattern. It took me about a year to start stepping out of my comfort zone to try stitches I never tried before and putting them into another type of design I never had done before. From going from hats and scarves for men and women, to designing more women’s accessories and clothing, to creating unique designs just for men.
With designing the Welsh Braided Cowl I challenged myself in using new crochet stitches, the Triad and Braided Putt Stitches. I also challenged myself to combine 2 different types of designs, a triangle shawl and a cowl.
It did take a lot of hard work with trial and error; putting the words into the right context; and creating a design that you are happy with.
Like I said earlier, when designing a crochet pattern there is a literary composition to it. You braid or weave three things together. You braid the writing of the pattern; the description of your pattern or meaning behind your pattern; and the actual stitches used in the design.
