Now that Spring is here I find myself always layering. Here on the west coast the weather can change from one hour to the next and you never really know what you’re in for. I was looking for something I could use for an outer layer that is still light, but will give a bit of coverage and a lot of style. I decided a shawl would do the trick, and was aiming for something modern, that could be worn a few different ways. I am very excited to share with you today the Riverside Shawl free pattern!

Light And Airy

The Riverside Shawl is the perfect light layer for those spring and summer days that only require a bit of coverage. The design is slightly oversized and can be worn in multiple ways to compliment any outfit.

The pattern is worked worked from the bottom tip up, making it so easy to customize the size.

Using a lightweight yarn gives it beautiful drape and airy coverage.

Riverside Shawl

The Yarn

I chose the gorgeous Cotlin Reflection yarn, kindly provided by *WeCrochet for this event. CotLin cool and lightweight Tanguis cotton and summer linen blend. It worked up absolutely perfect for the Riverside Shawl and had the prefect drape I was going for! The Reflections line had the most stunning colours too!

Materials

• Approx. 740 yds of #3/ DK weight yarn. I used *Knit Picks Cotlin Reflections in Nimbus, Stratus, and Hydrangea
• J/10 – 6.0mm crochet hook. I used my fave *Furls Odyssey
• *Scissors
• *Yarn needle
• *Tape measure

7 rows x 13 sts = 4″ square Pattern for gauge: dc

Laid flat: Approx. 73″ across the top Approx. 32″ top to tip Before blocking

Stitch Abbreviations

• ch – Chain
• dc – Double Crochet
• chsp – Chain Space
• st(s) – Stitch(es)
• sk – Skip

Pattern Notes

• US Terminology
• All beginning ch2 do not count as a stitch
• Shawl is worked bottom up
• The first and last st of each row will have 3 sts in the same st
• You can adjust size by doing more or less rows
• Pattern uses multiples of 3 + 1
• The instructions are step-by-step for the repeats, then continue the same stitch pattern throughout following stitch count chart
• *-* denotes repeat sequence

Stitch Counts and Structure

Repeat Row Structure

• Each row will begin and end with 3dc in the same st.
• Each repeat section consists of 10 rows.
• The first 7 rows are all dc.
• The 8th & 9th rows are the dc, ch1 rows.
• The 10th fills in the chsps.

The Pattern

Ch 4

Row 1: 3 dc in the second ch from the hook, dc in the next ch, 3 dc in the last ch, ch2, turn (7).

Row 2: 3 dc in the first st (same st as the ch2 here and throughout), dc in the next 5 sts, 3 dc in the last st, ch2, turn (11).

Row 3: 3 dc in the first st, dc in the next 9 sts, 3 dc in the last st, ch2, turn (15).

Row 4: 3 dc in the first st, dc in the next 13 sts, 3 dc in the last st, ch2, turn (19).

Row 5: 3 dc in the first st, dc in the next 17 sts, 3 dc in the last st, ch2, turn (23).

Row 6: 3 dc in the first st, dc in the next 21 sts, 3 dc in the last st, ch2, turn (27).

Row 7: 3 dc in the first st, dc in the next 25 sts, 3 dc in the last st, ch2, turn (31).

Row 8: 3 dc in the first st, ch1, *sk next st, dc in the next st, ch1,* repeat across, 3 dc in the last st, ch2, turn (20).

Row 9: 3 dc in the first st, ch1, sk next 2 sts, *dc in the chsp, ch1,* repeat across, sk next 2 sts, 3 dc in the last st, ch2, turn (21).

Row 10: 3 dc in the first st, sk next 2 sts, dc in the chsp, *dc in the next st, dc in the next chsp* repeat across, sk next 2 sts, 3 dc in the last st, ch2, turn (37).

Repeat rows 1 – 10, following stitch count chart above.

Please note: All repeats of row 1 will be: 3dc in the first st, dc in each st across, 3 dc in the last st.

I continued until I had 56 rows. You can continue until desired size.

Once you have completed your last row, tie off, weave in ends, block if desired.

All Set!!!
