The Perfect Stitch
I have always found the 24/7 cotton has great stitch definition, so I knew not only did I want to use a stitch that was strong but also beautiful! The Herringbone Half Double Crochet was the perfect fit!
Using the cotton double stranded gives the stitch even more definition and really makes a strong sturdy fabric perfect for a bag.
Pattern Tester Pics
My testers for the Hampton Handbag were amazing and had a great time experimenting with different yarn fibers and weights!

With 2 strands of yarn
Row 1: hhdc in second ch from hook and each ch across, ch1, turn (34).
Row 2 – 21: hhdc in each st across, ch1, turn (34).
Row 22: hhdc in each st across, ch1, tie off leaving long tail for seam (34).
Seaming the sides Closed (one strand)
Fold the body of the bag in half with the fold at the bottom. Using long tail and tapestry needle, whip stitch to the top of the first side, tie off.
Join another long piece of yarn to the bottom of the other side, whip stitch to the top and tie off.
Top of Bag (2 strands)
With 2 strands of your yarn and hook, join to one corner of the bag, Ch1.
Rnd 1: hhdc evenly around the top, join to the top of the Ch1 with a sl-st, ch1 (50 hhdc).
Rnd 2: *hhdc next 3 sts, hhdc2tog*, repeat around, join to the top of the Ch1 with a sl-st, ch1 (40 hhdc).
Rnd 3: hhdc in the next 27 sts, place st marker in st 27, hhdc next 6 sts, put st marker in st 33, hhdc next 7 sts, join to the top of the Ch1 with a sl-st, ch1 (40 hhdc).
Strap (2 Strands)
Row 1: sl-st in the next 3 sts, ch1, turn, hhdc next 6 sts, ch1, turn (6).
Row 2: hhdc in each st across, ch1, turn (6).
Row 3: hhdc2tog, hhdc next 2 sts, hhdc2tog, ch1, turn (4).
Row 4 – 38: hhdc in each st across, ch1, turn (4).
Row 39: 2hhdc in the first st, 1 hhdc in the next 2 sts, 2hhdc in the last st, ch 1 (6 hhdc). After 39 rows my handle was about 17″
Attaching the strap (1 strand)
Remove hook, do NOT tie off. Turn the bag inside out.
Take the end of the strap and line up evenly with the other handle on the opposite side of the bag. (I used the seam as a guide and placed 3 sts on either side to line it up). Using your hook in the last ch1 you made, sl-st the strap onto the body of the bag, sl-st to attach the rest of the sts across, tie off.
Turn back to right side out.
Button Flap (2 strands)
Row 1: Join both strands of yarn with sl-st to the first of the two st markers on the backside of the bag, ch1, hhdc across to the 2nd st marker, ch1, turn (6 ). If the stitch markers don’t seem to be centered due to shifting of stitches from working in the round, just adjust to center the flap.
Row 2 – 10: hhdc in each st across, ch1, turn (6).
Row 11: dc in the next 2 sts, ch1, sk 1 st, dc in the next 3 sts, ch1, turn ( 5).
Row 12: hhdc in the next 3 sts, sk ch-sp, hhdc in the next 2 sts, ch1, turn (5).
Row 13: hhdc2tog, hhdc in the next st, hhd2tog, tie off.
Button (1 strand)
Lay the bag flat with the button flap laying on top, mark where the button should go and sew on button.
